Frequently Asked Questions
Did you have a question that might not have been answered in other areas of the site? Well I have created this F&Q page to try and cover any details that might not have been clear or to answer questions about the process in regards to web design and having your site on the web. If there is anything else you may have questions on that are not covered you can always get in touch with me here.
Do you create apps that can be placed on the Android or Apple app market place?
No. At this time this is a service I do not offer when it comes to app creation. But I’m always learning so could be something I offer in the future.
Do you offer Hosting?
I do not offer hosting for your website. I can recommend a website hosting provider for you though like Host Monster. It’s what I use myself for hosting my website and other sites I have done over the past 10 years.
I don't have a domain name. How do I get one?
The domain name is like the address to your house. This is what your sites url (websites address) will be and how you are found on the internet. You can get your domain name through the website hosting providers out there like Host Monster. Weather it be a .com, .org, .net, and so on. Typical pricing depending on the dot extension can range from $10 – $30 per year. You want to come up with at lest 3 possible domain names in case the one you want is not available. Usually in the process of getting your domain name you will type in what you want and if it is not available you will be presented with a list of possible alternate domain names that are available.
It’s usually best to purchase your domain name through the same hosting company you are going to use to make it more convenient to have everything in one place for billing purposes and possible discounts.
How will my site be built/designed?
Majority of the time I build the site on the WordPress platform. By doing it this way it cuts down on website development time compared to developing a website by typing every line of code in HTML, CSS, and jQuery or using platforms like Ruby on Rails and the like. In some cases depending on whats needed the site will be done by “hand” (typing every line of code) or using something like Ruby on Rails.
For the 1st phase of the design process wire frames will be created for the basic layout of the pages on the website. Wire frames are just simple black and white sketches done by hand or done in Photo Shop that will be presented to you for approval so you will have a rough idea of where elements will be places and layout for content.
My current website maintenance plan does not cover the amount of hours needed for this month. What can I do?
If the website maintenance plan you have chosen with me falls short on hours needed for the maintenance or updates on a particular month you can purchase additional hours. Just head over to here to purchase more maintenance/update time.
Do you work with other platforms like Joomla, Drupal?
No. I build websites on the WordPress platform majority of the time. It cuts down on development time to get your project completed as quickly as possible. Other than WordPress and depending on the project the website will be hand coded (Every line of code written out in HTML, CSS, jQuery).
Who will I work with during the project?
I’m a freelance web designer and graphic designer. I work directly with every client. I feel also to be able to work directly with the person that is actually creating your website or working on your graphic design project is much better than working with a sales rep who may not be versed on all aspects of the coding language and the design process.
As we going through the design process you will be updated by email, and phone.
What kind of business do you work with?
I work with a broad range of company types across many business industries. Technology, food, camps, fitness, arts, fair trade, health and beauty, and more.
How long does it take to build a website?
A standard website can take 12 – 15 weeks to complete. The time frame will vary from project to project depending on the size and scope of the project. My goal always is to complete your project as quickly as possible. I will always give you realistic times frames in regards to your project needs.
How much will my website cost?
The cost to have your website project done depend on so many factors, it’s impossible to say just from that question alone. To get a better idea of what it will cost for your particular web design project please head over to the Quote Request page and be as detailed as possible when filling out the form so I can narrow you estimate down as much as possible. Once I have developed a quote for you I will follow up with a call to go over the details and will be able to come up with a more firm price point for your design project.
If you come across anyone who can answer that question on pricing with little to no info from you then they are not the website designer you should be dealing with.
Why can't I just build my own site on Wix or other similar company?
– A Wix or Weebly website may be ease to set up and the ads you see make it seem so easy to have a professional looking site but when it boils down to it you are only able to create what there website builder tool allows you to create.
– Depending on the plan you chose there will be ads on your site to benefit Wix not you.
– Wix websites are built on Flash technology (they’re trying to push HTML5 now so they do have that capability now), which is the enemy of web prosperity. Flash is so frowned upon that many phones don’t even display it, and some tablets don’t either. This means you’re already excluding a portion of people who might want to see your website. People who are surfing the web on their phones will have a hard time with your site.
– Google is not a fan of Wix websites. Part of the reason is because its Flash based which will affect your websites ranking on Google and other search engines considerably. This will affect how much traffic you can potentially get because your site will not be search engine optimized. That’s an expensive mistake for any website.
– Wix websites load slower than those built on HTML (like WordPress) and this will lose people who do want to read about you. Why? We have very little patience and having to wait 10 seconds or more to see a website is something we’re not use to. We will just click off. Slow loading sites will turn visitors off, and first impressions on the web can be everything. It can keep someone from visiting your site again. AND with a slow loading website, you will be further penalized by search engines because they know that your site provides poor user experience and they won’t want to vouch for it. That goes back to Google not liking it.
Is A Custom Design Really That Much More Valuable Than An Attractive Template?
In general, I don’t recommend the use of templates, but they may be appropriate in certain situations. For example, if you absolutely must have a site launched within the space of a few days, or if you are on an especially limited budget, a template might be an acceptable short-term solution. However, these instances should be the exception rather than the rule for these reasons:
1. Most templates do not conform to important usability and search engine guidelines. If you’re not meeting the needs of your users, or if the search engines can’t easily index your site, then you’ll simply be wasting your valuable time and money with this approach.
2. Most templates do not lend themselves to quick or easy modification. If you require design modifications, it’s important to understand that they can substantially increase your total cost.
3. Templates purchased from the major online vendors may be used hundreds or even thousands of times, even by your own competitors. A cookie cutter design doesn’t attract much lasting attention. Good design is a reflection of your business, your strategy and your audience.
I Need Some Changes On My Web Site Or Template. Do You Provide That Service?
Yes! For one time changes, I will provide you with an estimate before beginning the work and charge at my standard hourly rate. If you anticipate regular needs for maintenance, one of the Website Maintenance Plans may be more cost-effective for you.
